Using VPN in Saudi Arabia: OFW detained and facing charges
Saudi Arabia is known for its strict internet censorship laws, with many pop websites and services being blocked in the country. To circumvent this censorship, many individuals, including overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), use Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to access restricted websites and protect their online privacy.
However, using VPNs in Saudi Arabia is illegal, and those caught using them can face severe consequences. This was the case for one OFW who was of late detained by Saudi authorities for using a VPN.
The OFW, whose identity has not been disclosed, was using a VPN to access blocked websites and communicate with friends and family back home. However, he was caught by Saudi authorities and charged with violating the country’s internet laws.
The OFW is now facing a legal battle in Saudi Arabia and is in need of assistance from the Philippine government. His case serves as a warning to other OFWs and expatriates in the country about the risks of using VPNs in Saudi Arabia.
The Philippine government has urged its citizens in Saudi Arabia to abide by the country’s laws and regulations, including those concerning internet usage. It has also advised OFWs to be cautious when using VPNs and to research the laws of the country they are residing in to avoid getting into legal trouble.
The incident highlights the importance of understanding and respecting the laws of the countries in which OFWs are working. While VPNs may seem like a harmless tool for accessing blocked content, they can have serious consequences in countries with strict internet censorship laws.
As the OFW detained in Saudi Arabia awaits his fate, it is a reminder for all overseas Filipino workers to be mindful of the laws of the countries they are residing in and to seek assistance from their respective embassies if they find themselves in legal trouble.
