Webinar #106 “COVID-19 SURGE IN EUROPE: Susunod ba tayo?”
There is a important ascension in COVID-19 cases in European countries due to highly infectious sub-variants of Omicron, raising fear of a new global wave of disease as immunity declines and summertime travel has increased.
The United Kingdom, Portugal, Germany, France, Greece, Australia, Italy, Switzerland and Spain are all reporting rising infections. Some studies exhibit that the two new sub-variants BA.4 and BA.5 are able to evade the immune scheme and that neither previous infections nor vaccines are providing particularly strong protection.
Thus far, the sub-variants are not associated with more severe illness. However, their spread could termination in an uptick in infections and further mutations.
In the United Kingdom, a sharp increase in COVID-19 cases of hospitalizations have been reported in the media. Increasing COVID-19 cases in the United States have also been reported.
Given the number of overseas Filipinos in Europe, the war in Ukraine and more frequent international travel — we will halt to speak about what this surge in Europe means to the world and more specifically, what does it mean for us in the Philippines? Should we be preparing for a surge?
